PTT Holds Fiber Optic Training in Sorong, Timika, with Google, Telkomsel, and Special Staff Billy Mambrasar

Sorong, Timika, Papua | November 30, 2023
PT Palapa Timur Telematika held another fiber optic sharing session, this time in Sorong and Timika. The National Strategic Project Implementing Agency (NPP) for the Palapa Ring Timur National Strategic Project (PSN) for the construction of fiber optic backbone telecommunications infrastructure in Maluku, East Nusa Tenggara, and six provinces in Papua, collaborated with Google, Telkomsel, and a Papuan special staff member, Ka Billy Mambrasar.

This collaboration serves as a small example of the synergy between telecommunications in eastern Indonesia. PTT in the Palapa Ring Timur project serves as the backbone of the telecommunications network in eastern Indonesia, which Telkomsel can then use as an internet connection for Google applications. The event took place on November 16th at the BPVP Sorong Hall, with 350 students from SMKN 1 Sorong, SMKN 3 Sorong, and SMKS YPK Sorong participating. It also involved 150 students from SMKS Yapis in Timika.

Widodo Yuli Prasetyo, PTT's Support Operations Officer and event organizer, stated that PTT hopes this activity and program will provide long-term benefits, particularly in telecommunications. "We hope that students, especially those from the region, can contribute to the advancement of their respective regions," he said in a press release on Wednesday (November 30, 2023). Widodo explained that the program was not limited to discussions; they also held practical sessions introducing OTDRs, Optical Power Meters, and Splicers from PT Palapa Timur Telematika, as well as practical sessions introducing Radio Frequency from Telkomsel.

This sharing session introduced students to fiber optics, which can then be followed by Field Work Experience at Palapa Timur Telematika. During this internship, students can be selected for employment at PTT. In addition to educating about the importance of the Palapa Ring East network, this program is also one way for PTT to directly contribute to community development in the education sector. "PTT prioritizes competent local people who can contribute directly to the maintenance of the Palapa Ring East network, so that there is a sense of belonging to jointly maintain and develop the existing telecommunications infrastructure facilities," said Widodo.

Attended and supported directly by Sorong Communication and Information Office James Burung and Head of Vocational Training and Productivity Center Rahman Arsyad. In this sharing session, PTT presented material on fiber optic which is the telecommunications technology in the East Palapa Ring project. Meanwhile, Telkomsel explained about the BTS technology they use in Papuan regions and Google presented material on positive internet utilization by using the YouTube application delivered by Mr. Asa Saudale. Ka Billy Mambrasar, a special staff member of the President of the Republic of Indonesia for 2019 - 2024 who was born and raised in Papua, provided motivation and tips so that younger siblings from Papua could follow in his footsteps. "The presence of the East Palapa Ring is very helpful for telecommunications in Papua, especially in the teaching and learning process as we currently do, learning online without having to meet in person and can be done anywhere. We hope this convenience can enable students to further develop their abilities and skills so they can realize their dreams." Until now, it has been carried out in 19 schools and universities in the Eastern Indonesia region, namely at SMKN 2 Nabire, Muhammadiyah University of Sorong, Papua University of Manokwari, SMKN 2 Manokwari, SMKN Aloisius Ruteng NTT, SMK St. Petrus Ruteng NTT, SMKN 1 Kupang, SMK 3 Merauke, Musamus University of Merauke, Cenderawasih University, SMKN 3 Jayapura, SMA 2 Jayapura, SMKN 1 Keerom¹. SMKN 2 Manokwari, STIMIK Manokwari, SMKN 1 Sorong, SMKN 3 Sorong, SMK YPK Sorong and SMK Yapis Timika. This program will continue throughout the Palapa Ring East coverage area.

This sharing session provides students with an introduction to fiber optics, which can then be followed by Field Work Practice at the Palapa Timur Telematika company. During this PKL phase, students can be selected to continue working at PTT. "My deepest appreciation to PT Palapa Timur Telematika for holding this activity in collaboration with Telkomsel and Google. This is a rare event in Papua, and I hope the students will make the most of it. As part of the Vocational Training and Productivity Agency, I fully support this activity, which aims to develop the Papuan community. I hope this activity can continue and not be limited to Sorong and Timika," said Rahman Arsyad, Head of BPVP Sorong.
