Maintenance and restoration of the Palapa Ring Timur submarine cable network, particularly those located in the waters leading to the shore end, generally involves certified divers in the inspection process of restoration results and monitoring the condition of the submarine cable infrastructure.
To maintain the quality of the Palapa Ring Timur submarine cable network service, PT Palapa Timur Telematika (PTT) partnered with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) to obtain diving certification for the PADI Open Water Course. Four PTT FOP Support & Submarine employees registered for the training from January 9-22, 2023, centered in Biak Numfor, Papua.
The Biak location was chosen to allow participants to directly observe the condition of the Biak submarine cable route, the Interconnection City for Project 11 of the Palapa Ring Timur.
The Open Water Course material was presented by Marcel Erari, PADI Instructors: The training series begins with a theoretical class on introductory education, covering equipment, diving breathing techniques, hand signals, and how to use the equipment.
Next, participants receive training materials in a pool session. During this session, they learn basic techniques such as water entry, mask clearing, equalizing, buoyancy, regulator handling, and the buddy system in a swimming pool before practicing directly in the ocean (confined water).
The next session is Confined Water at a depth of 16-18 meters. In this phase, participants continue to develop basic diving skills and other supporting techniques during the dive, such as removing and replacing masks, breathing without a mask, and manual inflation. This ensures participants can navigate diving situations and conditions, which are crucial for diver safety.
The final stage involves participants receiving an exam module that must be completed to determine whether they are eligible for certification.
The output of this activity is that Open Water certification participants are expected to be able to carry out objective monitoring and analyze the condition of the Palapa Ring Timur submarine cable network in shallow water areas, while ensuring that the submarine cable position does not damage the marine ecosystem and upholds safety while on duty.
